For years, patients endured the burden of travelling long distances or paying exorbitant fees in private hospitals to access specialised diagnostic services. The new machine now promises timely, affordable, and accurate diagnosis right at their doorstep.
“A Step Towards Equitable Healthcare”
Speaking during the launch, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described the CT scan machine as a major milestone in strengthening Kenya’s public healthcare system. He noted that the equipment would significantly reduce the need for referrals to facilities outside the county, saving both time and money for patients.
“This machine will ease the pressure on families who have been forced to seek these services in other counties or private hospitals at a high cost,” said Duale. “It is a step towards ensuring equitable healthcare for all.”
A CT (Computed Tomography) scan is a critical diagnostic tool used to detect a wide range of medical conditions, including internal injuries, tumours, infections, and complex fractures. Its availability in Bungoma means patients can now receive faster diagnosis, enabling doctors to initiate treatment without unnecessary delays.
Duale’s Stern Warning to Fraudulent Hospitals
Duale, however, used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to healthcare providers engaging in fraudulent practices under the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme. He cautioned that the government would not tolerate hospitals exploiting loopholes to claim payments illegally.
“We are closely monitoring all facilities. Any hospital found using unorthodox means to claim SHA funds will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
His remarks come amid increased scrutiny of healthcare institutions nationwide, as the government seeks to streamline the SHA system and ensure public funds are used appropriately to benefit patients.
Local Leaders Welcome the Boost
Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka welcomed the launch, terming it a significant boost to the county’s healthcare infrastructure. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing more resources in the health sector to improve service delivery.
“This is just the beginning. As a county government, we are committed to ensuring that our health facilities are well equipped and staffed to serve our people effectively,” Lusaka said.
Deputy Governor Jennifer Mbatiany echoed his sentiments, emphasising the need for continuous improvement in healthcare services. She noted that access to modern diagnostic tools is essential in reducing mortality rates and improving overall public health outcomes.
Lifecare Hospital Reinstated, Bungoma West Remains Suspended
The launch also shed light on the status of several health facilities within the county. Duale revealed that Lifecare Hospital, which had previously been barred from operating under the SHA scheme, has now been reinstated after meeting the required standards. However, Bungoma West Hospital remains suspended, pending compliance with regulatory requirements.
“Every Shilling Must Benefit Wananchi”
Social Health Authority official Mercy Mwangangi provided insights into the utilisation of SHA funds in Bungoma County. She emphasised transparency and accountability in the management of public health resources, noting that proper use of funds is key to sustaining healthcare improvements.
“Our goal is to ensure that every shilling allocated to healthcare directly benefits wananchi. Accountability and efficiency are non-negotiable,” she stated.
Residents Speak: “This Machine Will Save Lives”
For residents, the CT scan machine is more than just a piece of equipment—it represents hope and relief. Many shared their experiences of struggling to access such services in the past, often delaying diagnosis due to financial constraints or logistical challenges.
Fred Nyongesa, speaking on behalf of local residents, said the machine would greatly ease their burden. He pointed out that CT scan services have largely been confined to private hospitals, where costs are prohibitively high for many families.
“Some of us have had to travel to other counties or spend a lot of money in private hospitals,” Nyongesa said. “This machine will save lives because people can now get tested early and start treatment.”
Residents urged the government to continue upgrading health facilities across the county, arguing that access to quality healthcare should not be a privilege but a basic right.
A Turning Point for Bungoma
Healthcare experts agree that early diagnosis plays a crucial role in effective treatment, particularly for conditions such as cancer, head injuries, and internal bleeding. The availability of a CT scan machine in a public hospital setting is therefore expected to improve patient outcomes significantly.
