April 5, 2026| Aggrey Etyang and Charity Chemutai delivered commanding performances to headline the sixth edition of the Busia Cross-Border Run, an event that combined competitive athletics with regional integration and community health outreach.

Held at the Busia Vocational Training Centre, the race drew athletes from both Kenya and Uganda, with Etyang stamping his authority in the men’s 15km contest. Competing in the event for the first time, the Administration Police officer based in Elgeyo Marakwet surged ahead of the field to secure victory, relying on experience built over more than a decade in competitive running.

He held off a strong challenge from Kevin Etyang, who finished second, and Chris Odora, who came in third, completing a podium sweep for athletes from Teso North Sub County.

After the race, Etyang pointed to his years of discipline and exposure on the circuit as key to his triumph, but used the moment to call for greater investment in athletics development. He noted that while the region continues to produce talent, it still lags behind others with more established training academies and facilities.

Fresh from his Busia win, Etyang now turns his attention to the international stage, with upcoming appearances lined up at the Linz Marathon in Austria and the Düsseldorf Marathon in Germany later this month. He has previously featured in major global races, including Frankfurt, Tokyo and Paris.

In the women’s 15km race, Charity Chemutai rose to the occasion in a closely fought contest, edging out her rivals through a mix of endurance and resolve. She credited her victory to determination and faith after crossing the finish line ahead of Ruth Namukula and Harriet Okiring, who finished second and third respectively.

Beyond the elite races, the event showcased emerging talent in shorter distances. Caleb Ouma led the men’s 10km race, while Trizah Adipo topped the women’s category. Young runners also had their moment in the 2km races, with Doroth Amoo and Philip Wafula emerging victorious in the girls’ and boys’ categories.

The race route itself symbolised the spirit of cross-border cooperation, taking participants through both Kenya and Uganda. Athletes crossed into Uganda via the Peace Complex, navigating roads through Lapam, District and Majanji before re-entering Kenya near the police junction and customs area. The final stretch wound through key roads in Busia town before culminating at the vocational training centre.

Authorities on the Ugandan side provided escort vehicles, including police and medical teams, ensuring safety across the international stretch and reinforcing collaboration between the two countries.

Winners in the 15km races were rewarded with medals, cash prizes and farm inputs such as mango tree seedlings and maize seed packets, reflecting the organisers’ emphasis on sustainability and community empowerment. Athletes finishing outside the podium places also received incentives, underscoring the inclusive nature of the event.

The run attracted regional leaders and stakeholders, who hailed it as more than just a sporting event. Speakers highlighted its role in strengthening Kenya–Uganda relations, promoting trade and fostering cultural exchange along the border.

There was also a strong focus on benchmarking public services, with Ugandan representatives commending Kenyan institutions for their approach to integrated service delivery, healthcare and youth-focused programmes.

Alongside the race, organisers conducted a medical outreach that delivered tangible benefits to the community. Dozens of residents accessed services ranging from blood donation and pressure screening to eye care, nutrition assessment and family planning. Cases requiring specialised attention, including hearing impairment and antenatal care, were also handled, while some patients received X-ray services.

As the event continues to grow, it is increasingly carving out a unique identity—where sport, diplomacy and community wellbeing intersect—firmly positioning Busia as a hub of cross-border collaboration.
