May 3, 2026| Leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration have criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for engaging in partisan politics, arguing that retired heads of state are traditionally expected to play a unifying role.
Speaking during a women and youth empowerment event in Busia County, the leaders warned that Kenyatta’s continued public criticism of the government could heighten political tensions.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula urged Kenyatta to follow the example of former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, who largely stayed out of active politics after leaving office. “I respect Uhuru as a former president, but he should now serve as a beacon of peace and unity,” Wetang’ula said.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot accused Kenyatta of undermining the government through alleged ties to opposition activities, warning of a political response if the trend continues. “We are ready to take you head-on unless you stop undermining President Ruto,” Cheruiyot said.
Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe and Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe argued that retired leaders should respect the current administration. Mugabe noted, “Kenyans gave you ten years. Allow President Ruto the same opportunity to deliver.”
Busia Governor Paul Otuoma struck a conciliatory tone, noting that former presidents are symbols of unity and continuity, and that divisive rhetoric risks eroding that stature.
The leaders acknowledged that political differences are inevitable but maintained that former presidents carry a unique responsibility to foster national cohesion.
