Bungoma August 4, 2025-The County is in mourning following the passing of one of its longest-serving ward representatives, Hon. Barasa Mukhongo, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Chwele–Kabuchai Ward.
Mukhongo died early Monday morning while undergoing treatment at Hopekin Hospital in Bungoma town. He had been battling illness for some time and, despite medical intervention, succumbed while under care.
Born on August 2, 1956, the late Mukhongo was a veteran politician known for his steadfast dedication to the people of Kabuchai. His political career spanned decades, beginning in the era of civic leadership before devolution. He later served as an MCA under the Ford Kenya party, to which he remained loyal until his demise.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Bungoma County, with residents and leaders praising his humility, leadership, and relentless pursuit of development for his constituents.
Governor Lusaka Leads Tributes
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka led tributes, extending heartfelt condolences to Mukhongo’s family and the people of Kabuchai. Speaking to the press in Bungoma town, Lusaka described the late MCA as a courageous and dedicated leader.
“We have lost a true servant of the people. Barasa Mukhongo was not just an MCA—he was a pillar in Bungoma’s political landscape, respected across political divides,” Governor Lusaka said.
He pledged to support the family and the county assembly in ensuring Mukhongo is laid to rest with dignity befitting his service.
“He Spoke for the Voiceless” – MP Kalasinga
Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga remembered Mukhongo as a fearless and compassionate leader who consistently stood up for the marginalized.
“Barasa was a man of the people. He gave voice to the voiceless and believed in servant leadership. His death is a great loss to Kabuchai and Bungoma County as a whole,” Kalasinga stated.
He urged local leaders to put aside political differences and unite in giving Mukhongo a befitting send-off.
Assembly Leader Hails His Integrity
Leader of Majority in the Bungoma County Assembly, Joseph Nyongesa, lauded Mukhongo’s principled leadership and mentorship of younger MCAs.
“He was a beacon of integrity and a believer in service above self. His institutional memory and wisdom were invaluable to this assembly,” Nyongesa said.
He also credited Mukhongo for helping bridge community and political divides, describing him as a unifying force in a region often prone to rivalry.
A Legacy of Grassroots Leadership
Mukhongo’s career was characterized by consistency, grassroots connection, and a deep passion for service. He championed infrastructure development, access to healthcare, and youth empowerment in Kabuchai. He initiated bursary programs and mentored young leaders.
Locals remember him for his hands-on approach—often making unannounced visits to public institutions and marketplaces to assess service delivery and engage directly with residents.
“He was not only our MCA but also a friend. He once helped our family settle hospital bills during a crisis,” recalled Jane Nasimiyu, a Chwele resident.
“He preferred action over publicity—a real grassroots general,” added Jackson Wekesa, another local.
Funeral Arrangements Underway
Preparations are ongoing to organize a dignified farewell. The Bungoma County Assembly is expected to convene a special sitting in his honor, while Ford Kenya is planning a tribute to celebrate his life and contributions.
Governor Lusaka confirmed that the county government will support the funeral arrangements.
“Mukhongo devoted his life to public service. It is only right that we honor him with a heroic send-off,” he said.
