June 22, 2026| A public inquest into the death of former Malaba Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Gerald Tobias Murunga (pictured) will commence on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Busia Magistrate’s Court.
According to family member Daniel Mogoria, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) forwarded the matter to Busia Magistrate’s Court No. 2 after investigators failed to conclusively establish who was responsible for Murunga’s death.
“The DPP could not pin the death on anybody. They are now seeking to conclude the matter through a public inquest and are calling on anyone with credible evidence to come forward and help determine who may be responsible,” Mogoria said.
Murunga died in early February 2025 after his motorcycle was allegedly involved in a grisly accident at Ketebat along the Malaba–Angurai road. Initial reports indicated that he lost control after hitting a huge pothole.
He was rushed to Kocholia Sub-County Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to severe head injuries while undergoing treatment.
However, members of his family questioned the conclusion that the former police officer died solely as a result of a road accident, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to forward its findings to the ODPP for review.
After assessing the investigation file, the ODPP recommended a public inquest.
The proceedings are expected to hear testimonies from witnesses and examine evidence surrounding the circumstances of Murunga’s death before determining whether any individual should face prosecution.
